I hope this doesn’t confuse your internal clock too much but today is obviously Friday, not the usual Tuesday when I send this.

It’s been one of those weeks where the rhythm of life gets completely thrown off. On Monday, I was sitting in the garden, finalising the original version of this newsletter and enjoying a bit of sun, when I heard a crash from inside the house. I didn’t think too much of it at first. With teenage boys and a dog, noise is just part of the background.

But then my wife shouted for me to come upstairs and something in her voice told me this wasn’t the usual chaos.

I got to the top of the stairs to find my eldest son, Henry, having a seizure in the bathroom.

This is the fourth seizure in the past few months (that we know of) and Henry’s currently being investigated for epilepsy. It’s been a lot for him to take in, especially at a moment in life that’s meant to be opening up. His first seizure happened when he was just weeks away from turning 18, with his driving test on the horizon and all the independence that comes with it. Suddenly everything feels like it’s been put on hold.

What we’re learning, slowly, is that seizures, as frightening as they are, do pass. They become something to understand, to manage and to live alongside for now. And in the middle of all this, Henry has shown a level of resilience and self-awareness that makes me incredibly proud.

This time, though, was different. In the process of the seizure, he hit his head hard and ended up with what was essentially a concussion. So we found ourselves heading to A&E. And part way through all of that, while messaging a friend, we captured a snapshot of the humanity of finding some playfulness in the deep…

I took this photo partly to capture the moment, partly because Henry, in his usual way, was still able to find some humour in the golf ball-sized lump on his head. Only later did I notice what was playing on the news screen behind him. Donald Trump, mid-speech, filling the background of a very personal moment.

There’s something oddly fitting about that. A snapshot of a family dealing with something immediate and human, while in the background, the wider noise of politics and global tension carries on. Two layers of reality in a single frame.

Anyway back to the NHS. I want to say this clearly because it matters to me. I love the NHS. I really do. It’s one of the most important things we have and I know so many people within it who give more than should reasonably be expected, every single day, to care for others at their most vulnerable.

But what we walked into that day was hard to ignore.

It was so busy there wasn’t even anywhere to sit. The waiting times stretched well beyond six hours. At one point, a consultant came out and spoke to the room, asking people, if they possibly could, to go home and come back another day.

Over the past 30 years, the number of hospital beds in this country has roughly halved. When you really sit with that, it’s quite something. A system trying to carry more and more, with less and less room to do it in.

This isn’t about blame, it’s more complex than that and it points to something deeper. We’re starting to feel the strain in systems we’ve long taken for granted.

And it’s not just healthcare. You can sense it more broadly, in the cost of living, in global instability and in the fraying of things that once felt solid.

I don’t say that to be heavy but because it shapes the choices in front of us.

We can retreat, build higher walls, try to insulate ourselves from it all. Or we can move in the opposite direction…

I keep coming back to this simple idea that’s guided me for years and why I try my best to build longer tables.

When things feel uncertain, resilience doesn’t come from isolation. It comes from connection. From knowing the people around you and more importantly, knowing how to help each other.

Who can fix things? Who can grow food? Who understands how to care for someone when they’re unwell? Who you can call, not just in a crisis, but in the everyday moments that make up a life?

That kind of community isn’t theoretical. You can feel it when you step into it.

It’s one of the reasons I love spending time with Kate and the wider community at Four Acre Farm. There’s something grounding about being there, about working with the land and growing food alongside other people.

And there’s real power in that. Not in a loud or dramatic way but in a steady, reassuring one.

None of us knows exactly what’s coming next, whether that’s in our own lives (as this week reminded me) or in the wider world. But I know I’d rather face it surrounded by people, with shared skills, shared care and a sense that we’re in it together. That’s reciprocity and that’s natural.

Maybe the most important shift for me this week is that I’m even sharing this at all.

For a long time, I would have kept something like this to myself. Carried on, kept things looking steady from the outside and avoided being the person with ‘problems’.

But that way of being creates distance rather than strength.

What I’ve found instead is that when you open up, even a little, other people meet you there, the conversations deepen and the connection becomes real. You’re reminded that everyone is navigating something, whether you can see it or not.

And despite everything that’s going on, I have more hope for the future than I ever have before. None of this is easy but I know I’m not doing any of it alone. And a big part of that is knowing that you’re there, sitting around that longer table with me.

As the community grows, I’ve also been thinking about how we create virtual space for those of you who aren’t local to Bournemouth, so you can still feel part of it all. It’s time for our next gathering in The Natural Network wheel.  Today, most of us spend the majority of our time indoors, under artificial light, glued to screens, trying to force ideas on demand. The result is well documented - burnout, exhaustion and a persistent sense of not doing 'enough'.

So this gathering brings us back to ourselves. To lead, think, to build with intention, clarity and power.

Wrapping up…

So that’s where I find myself this week. A little tired, a little more aware of how quickly things can change and very clear on what actually matters.

If there’s one thing I’m taking from all of this, it’s that none of us are meant to do it alone. Whether it’s a hospital waiting room, a conversation that opens up when you least expect it or standing side by side in a field growing food, it’s the people around us that make things feel steady again.

That’s the longer table for me. Not an idea but something we keep choosing to build.
