I hope you had a restful Christmas. As we approach the end of 2025 and step toward 2026, many of us feel that familiar pull to reflect, reset or reinvent. The countdown to midnight can make it seem as though we must begin again the moment the calendar flips and that pressure can be heavy.

“New Year, New You” works for some people and that’s great. It can offer a sense of release and a clean slate. But I’ve always believed we get the chance to begin again every single day. The calendars we use now are relatively recent inventions built around efficiency and administration rather than the natural rhythms humans lived by for most of our history.

So when January arrives - dark, cold and biologically designed for rest, it’s no surprise that many of us don’t feel the sudden burst of motivation we’re told we should have. And yet, our deadlines, inboxes and bank managers don’t pause for winter. Which leaves us with a choice.

We can buy into the hype and jump straight back into hustle mode or we can choose something more intentional. We can set boundaries, honour our own timing and build a life that aligns with what we need (even if it’s just a tiny shift for now).

Last week we explored our different inner parts. My hope is that this festive break has given you even a small nervous‑system reset, enough space for your intuitive voice to be heard again. If you feel energised and ready to set a resolution, wonderful. If you feel more drawn to rest, to plan slowly or to wait for your own right moment, that’s equally valid. Nature does exactly that - seeds stay underground until the conditions are right.

This is at the heart of what we’re building with the Natural Network by recognising that we’re more effective in our work and our lives when we respect our own rhythms. It’s also a core principle of the coaching approach behind ‘appreciative inquiry’ by starting with what has worked for you before, not with what others expect from you now.

New Year’s resolutions often skip that step. We set goals because we feel we should, then share them with each other without asking whether they truly fit our needs, values or timing.

Humans are part of nature. It’s not something “out there” in a forest it’s inside us. And nature doesn’t rush because of a date on a calendar.

That’s why I keep returning to this line from the original TrimTab Buckminster Fuller:

I love this quote because it disrupts the pressure we often feel around times like New Year. Bucky is reminding us that transformation isn’t always visible, measurable or logical.

A caterpillar doesn’t look like a future butterfly. It doesn’t behave like one. It doesn’t even have the structures it will eventually need. If you judged it only by what you could see in that moment, you’d never guess what it could become.

There’s something freeing in that.

It suggests that we don’t need to have everything figured out to be in the middle of becoming. We don’t need a perfect plan, a colour‑coded strategy or a bold declaration on 1st January. Sometimes the most important changes are happening below the surface, internally and in ways we can’t yet articulate.

And just like the caterpillar, there are phases where things feel messy or uncertain - the “chrysalis moments” where old structures dissolve before new ones form. That part isn’t a failure, it’s part of the process.

And that means any of us still have time to become whatever we dream for ourselves and even things we can’t yet imagine. I often think about the burnt‑out, corporate version of me and how impossible this life would have seemed to him.

I’m still on my journey but the fact that I’m here now, writing this newsletter, doing work that feels aligned and meaningful, is proof that transformation doesn’t always announce itself in advance. Sometimes you only realise you were changing once you’ve already emerged somewhere new.

For me, this takes the pressure off the idea that we must reinvent ourselves the moment the calendar flips. It reminds me that growth doesn’t follow a schedule and that potential isn’t always obvious even to ourselves. It also echoes the Internal Family Systems work we explored last week as some parts of us want to keep us safe by keeping us small, even when another part might be preparing to grow wings.

I was thinking about all of this during a walk at Maiden Castle near Dorchester with my wife last week:

The winter light was low and our shadows stretched long across the hills. It made me think about the parts of ourselves we don’t always see but still travel with us. On that hill, I could literally watch my shadow following me and it was a reminder of the metaphorical shadows we all carry - the stories we’ve lived, the pain we’ve held and the corners of our inner world that still need light.

This is why I love the work I do. Not dwelling on the past, but to understand how it shapes the choices we make next.

Soulful coaching helps us move from performing to feeling and from forcing change to allowing it. Carl Jung famously said that ‘until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life, and you will call it fate’. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that our shadow sometimes has more influence than we realise.
